Professional wrestler dies in Australia

Worldwide professional wrestler Steven Nicklaus Romero, who wrestled under the name "Jay Youngblood", died Monday in Melbourne, Australia.

The 30-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Romero was in  Australia touring with his brother Mark at the time of his death. He died of heart failure related to a wrestling injury.

Mr. Romero was born in California and grew up in Amarillo. He attended Amarillo High School where he was an outstanding wrestler.

He was a 15-year veteran of professional wrestling, contesting with most of the greats in the sport in the United States and around the world. 

At one time he held the all-Asian heavyweight championship.

Mr. Romero and his partner, Ricky Steamboat, held the World Tag Team Championship five times.

He defeated world heavyweight champion Rick Flair in a non-title match in Tampa, Fla. in 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Susan of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter Ricca Sands of the home; his parents, Mr and Mrs Ricky Romero Jr., of Amarillo; three brothers, Ricky Jr., of Amarillo, Mark of Amarillo and Chris of Amarillo; two sisters Yolanda Dodgen and Melissa Miller, both of Amarillo; and his grandparents.
