Clair was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the eighth round, eighth pick, 95th overall in the 1951 NFL Draft, but because of the U.S. Army draft, he never had a chance to play for the Bears. He served as an officer in Korea in the Army Artillery from 1952 to 1954.

Started his teaching career at Palo Duro High School in 1955.  The first year of PD.  Moved to Tascosa High School in 1967.  In 1974, Mr. Mayes began working at Amarillo College as director of vocational programs in the Continuing Education Department. He retired from AC on Aug. 1, 1995.
